Indian Wedding Styles and Trends

When you think of an Indian Hindu wedding, the things that come to mind is the colour, fun and music. It is rich in rituals and ceremonies which last for three to seven days. Weddings have always been an extravagant affair in India. And now they are getting even more lavish. It is common to have thousands of guests at the wedding. Research shows that an average Indian wedding costs around $44,000.

Today the trend is towards Bollywood. The Indian film industry has a great influence on the wedding scenario in India. You will see the bride and groom dressed in the latest fashion showcased by actors in the movies. Though red has always been the favourite colour for the bride, the latest trends see them experimenting with bold colours like purple, orange, gold and blue. Care is taken to ensure that the groom’s dress colour and style do not clash with that of the bride’s. Even the stage decorations, the flowers used are all done, keeping in mind the colour of the bride’s dress.

The influence of the movies can be seen even in the events, rituals and games that are organised during the wedding. You will find the influence of Bollywood in the music too. These days it is rare to find family singing songs. The trend is to have choreographers and DJs who play or sing Bollywood songs. And you have a practised and choreographed dance to the music. Having a celebrity to perform at the wedding is the next big thing.

Traditionally all the wedding requirements were organised by family members. Today there is a must have on your list – the wedding planner for a designer wedding. The wedding planner helps in organising unique, classy, theme based weddings. The themed wedding has everything from the invitation cards to the venue decoration in line with the theme. Unique wedding décor using rich fabric such as satin and silk is becoming a fashion these days with ice and food carving to create exquisite sculptures. The destination wedding is another trend that is catching on. Weddings are being held at palaces like the recent Arun Nayyar – Liz Hurley wedding.

It is in fashion these days to find multi international and national cuisines served for the pre-wedding and wedding parties. Food ranging from Italian, Thai, Lebanese and Chinese to a variety of Indian dishes are served. It is common to have live counters of various international cuisines for the guests.

Being environment conscious is a trend that will be seen more this year, with great care being taken on using handmade paper for invitations and pesticide free flowers and also organic food items being served.

More and more often these days after the wedding the bride and groom fly off to far away exotic destinations for their honeymoon. They now no longer spend their honeymoon on Indian soil. The further the better.
