I love individuality, I like to be different and that’s why I designed my own engagement ring. I tried all the jewellers in my area and they all seemed to be selling variations on the same ring. The rings were bold and brassy but rather dull looking.
Well I thought I can do better than this, so I drew how I thought I would like it to look and then went around the more specialist jewellers and ask if they could help me, well I was in for a shock. They all wanted far too much for what I thought should have been straight forward.
My boyfriend suggested I look on the internet and after looking at hundreds of rings I was about to give up when I found a site MyDiamonds.com that sold diamonds separately. So I thought why not buy the shape of diamond I wanted and then get it mounted into a ring of my design.
Well it’s actually quite easy to choose first of all you select the shape of ring you want. I picked Marquis it has loads of facets and is fairly unusual as far as my research goes and I like to be different.
The next stage is to pick your price range, you can select from 200 to oh my god! how much! As you make selections on MyDiamonds.com you can see the number of diamonds getting fewer each time.
After setting my price range from reasonable to how far can I stretch his wallet, I was down to 29 diamonds, from my sketch I knew I wanted at least 0.5 Carat but not bigger than 1 carat that was he next selection which whittled it down to just a dozen diamonds.
The next choice is cut well I didn’t really know what cut to go for so I left this unchanged. Finally MyDiamonds.com
allows you to choose the clarity of the diamond, I set it quite high just to see what came up, well it was a 0.9 carat marquise with a very good cut. After going through the exercise I felt I had got the diamond I wanted, I asked my boyfriend if he liked it and he did, luckily he didn’t blink at the price. I had already primed him to think he was going to have to spend a lot more, so when it was half that price he was probably very relieved.
I took the diamond to an old jewellers in Bristol and showed them the kind mount I wanted, they made a couple of changes to the design which I really liked and 6 weeks later I had the ring of my dreams.
I get married next year, now to design the wedding rings.
