Indian Bridal Shoes
Shoes are one of the most important accessories for the Indian bride. The shoes that are worn by the bride on her special day are chosen with utmost care not only to match her beautiful dress but also for their comfort. Traditionally the shoes worn by an Indian bride are made of high quality leather. They look like ballet flats and are called khussa, juti or mojari.
The shoes are usually purchased after the dress has been decided upon but before the final fitting. This way the bride ensures that the shoes complement her dress and also that the length of her dress is just right. Not only does the colour of the shoe complement the dress but also the embroidery on it matches that on the dress. Beautiful motifs are embroidered in gold or coloured thread near the toe and the heel of the shoe. You can find sequins, beads and pearls stuck or stitched on the shoes.
Indian bridal shoes are designed to give maximum comfort and are normally flat or medium heels. They usually have a soft cushioned sole to keep the bride’s feet from aching with all the standing and walking around that she has to do. Leather is usually the most comfortable material as the feet are able to breathe comfortably in them.
Today the Indian bride does not limit herself to the flat ballerina type of shoes. She also wears sandals, slippers, and stilettos made of leather and wood among other material. These too have embroidery, beads and sequins work on them.
Most people prefer to wear the mojaries with the lehenga or ghagra giving the entire ensemble an ethnic, elegant and glamorous touch. If the bride chooses to wear a sari or salwar kameez, stilettos and sandals look nice. Those brides who feel they need a little height, flat, platform or wedge heels are in vogue these days. If the bride chooses to wear the juti or mojari, she will need to break them in, these shoes are originally very stiff. Once worn with wet feet the mojaries will mould themselves to the feet. They get comfortable with use.
Most middle and up market shoe shops have a bridal section from where the shoes can be selected. Some good shoe stores may also take in special orders for the “made-to-order” shoe that the bride wants. The bride could also have her shoes personally made for her by designers who specialise in this. But this could turn out to be more expensive. Many a times the bride buys a pair of white satin or silk shoes and gets them dyed and embroidered to match her bridal outfit. She can get these done at the shoe stores or even do them herself.
Elegance with comfort is the main consideration in purchase of the bridal shoe.
