Indian Wedding Glossary

Choli: A choli is the traditional Indian blouse. Short and close fitting, it usually ties at the back with single ties or a criss-cross shoe-lace style drawstring, or it ties into a knot at the front in the middle of the chest.

Chunni or Dupatta: A wrap or scarf worn with Indian garments.

Lehenga: A Lehenga is a long skirt which reaches down to the ankles. It is worn with a choli and a chunni

Ghagra: Skirt, usually flared, which reaches down to the ankles. Again worn with a choli and chunni

Salwar Kameez: Salwars are loose pajama like trousers. The legs are wide at the top, and narrow at the bottom. The kameez is a long shirt or tunic. The side seams (known as the chaak) are left open below the waist-line, which gives the wearer greater freedom of movement

Kundan: Stones or crystals for use in embroidery, available in many colours.

Zardozi: Gold thread embroidery using metallic elements and threads, sometimes mirrors, precious or semi precious stones

Ghunghat : The chunni or dupatta is worn over the head during the wedding ceremony.

Kalidar: The kalidar style lehenga has panels that are sewn into the waist to widen the flare.
